I’ve never been sure why VMware makes it so hard to download the vSphere client, but I needed it recently for writing my article on installing the vSphere 5.5 client on a domain controller. To reproduce the error to get a screenshot, I needed a copy of the vSphere 5.5 client installer. Of course, VMware tried to do some kind of security through obscurity thing that leaves me browsing to an ESXi box and then clicking the link and downloading the client from their website.
To make this easier for the rest of the populous to access, I’ve decided to write this short post with a direct download link to the vSphere 5.5 client installer as well as ways to download the vsphere client for other versions as well. If anything is missing, let me know and I’ll get it posted.
I intend to update this article with the latest versions as they come out.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel that VMware is only making it harder for their end users (systems administrators) to do their jobs?
I have a VMware account and it is still next to impossible to download this thing.
I read a great article the other day in Ars Technica about IT “Strongman Competitions” being an antiquated, vestigial concept of a by-gone era. Attempting to download the vSphere client from VMware certainly qualifies.
http://arstechnica.com/business/2013/11/its-the-little-things-pt-3-harder-is-not-better/
I have been searchin for about 5 min now on VMware sites without success.
Thanks for the links!
My theory is they just want people to start using the web client interface.
Thanks for the link.
Yea, they’re really pushing people away from using the free product. It’s sad when you look at the impact that would have on small business. And glad I could help with the link.
which breaks with every browser update….
thank you thank you thank you
Thanks for posting the links, I managed to waste a half hour on VMwares’ site trying to find them.
Been there done that for sure. I got to thinking about it and my guess is that they also do it so they can track usage patterns, etc. for marketing. Glad it helped.
Thanks man, I actually found where to download the error than got Error Processing Request… Thanks vmware!
Your help is greatly appreciated! I also don’t appreciate VMWare’s choice of obscuring this product.
Thank you for the link
Thanks for the link.. Any idea for Veritas Cluster Server (VCS) by Symantec?
Sorry, unfortunately I don’t have VCS. Glad to help on the VMware link though.
I unsuccessful to login it because the IP Address / Name section is not automatically detected. What is the cause of the problem?
I’m using the Windows Server 2012.
It doesn’t automatically detect the IP address or login information of your VMware host. You’re using ESXi 5.5?
Sorry, I’m still new in this VMware. Do I need to Install VMware Vcenter Server instead of ESXi 5.5? What is the purposes of ESXI 5.5?
Sorry man, those are questions I’m not going to be able to answer simply here. I’d advise looking to Google for any number of sites to help you figure out how to put together a VMware virtualization environment using ESXi…
Over simplified explanation to tawil’s question.
http://stackzilla.com/what-is-the-difference-between-vmware-esx-esxi-vsphere-and-vcenter/
Thanks a lot for these links. I am struggling hard to install the vsphere client 5.5 which is supposed to be free to use with 64Gb RAM on host system..
You save my time really, but the update to 5.5 forced me to download an extra file to actually downgrade to 5.1!! And this so told free licence keeps warning that my system has more than 32Gb of RAM!!
Well I can confirm here vsphere licensing is a pain in the A**.
I don’t want to spend hours on learning, sutdying this obscure license system.
The vm soft is rather easy to use but why is there no clear price, download, licence..?
Ok to pay one licence but then please with just few clicks to spend on this stuff.
Thank you for the links!
You sir are quite welcome. 🙂
Good grief! Thank you, sir!
Thanks!!!
You just saved my night, that download site is like a spaghetti, but less tastier…. 😛
*laugh* That’s a great description. 🙂
You’re a legend! Desperately needed this for my visualization unit of my Diploma.
Thanks for the links, I just updated my primary work Windows machine and gave the vmWare download site a big WTF when trying to find the vSphere client installer. 🙂
Holy Balls, they make it hard to find shiz!
Thank you, thank you…
You can download latest version here
http://vsphereclient.vmware.com/vsphereclient/1/8/8/0/8/4/1/VMware-viclient-all-5.5.0-1880841.exe
Thanks for the update. Updated above.
Thanks a lot for the links! I’ve been searching for this vSphere Client for a while. I don’t understand why VMWare are just making things harder for us.
Thanks again
Thanks a lot Joseph.
Tks a lot, very helpful! (from BR!)
thanks for the links vmware the monster doesnt like the comsumer so they strong arm there products
So it would appear. They still have the greatest virtualization software available, by a long shot. I just hope they don’t lose site of small business.
Thank you! You are awesome!!
Thank You very much for the link.
It would have been next to impossible otherwise
You bet!
Thank you sir! I’m comfortable using putty, but there comes a point where I would like to see the gui every now and then. I am definitely going to bookmark this page and share it with others.
Happy to have helped Chad. Thanks for commenting and sharing!
well done. this is awesome. have struggled for ages trying to find the client on the vmware site. thank you for this.
Thank you!! Been searching for these for a little while
Thanks for your help!
You bet guys. Thank you both for taking the time to share your gratitude!
Thanks a Ton for sharing!
Thank you a billion times!!! It is soo frustating
you are a saint. thank you so much for posting these. great speed, too! was hitting 7MB/s
saved me several minutes of trying to remember my vmware login and navigating through that horrid page
Thanks for the links
hello sir Thanks for the link , sir i have one problem with my 2 standalone VM servers where vm server 5.1 was installed , i guess few days back it get the update now i cant access both the servers , when i try to connect through my vm client i get this error message ” An unknown connection error occurred. (The client could not send a complete request to the server. (The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send ” i also try to connect through Https: but no luck it also dnt work , search google a lot but no luck if you can help
the problem connecting after the update is likely the updated security and certificate info the newer versions use. if you are trying to run the VMware client on a machine less than Vista (XP, WinSvr2003, etc. then they won’t be able to connect – At All. you need to use a newer operating system to run the client and connect.
Thanks for links! Saved us a tone of time.
Thanks! Saved my day.
thank you..!
Thanks, Joseph! Appreciate it!
Thank you Joseph, please apply for a job at VMWare and learn them how to help their customers 😉
Thank you for posting the vSphere Client 5.5 Update 2 download link! It was refreshing to know I wasn’t losing my touch and not the only one unable to locate it on the VMware website.
Keep up the good work, Joseph, and thank you once again for saving my Friday evening and my sanity 🙂
You bet! Always happy to help a fellow IT services guy. Enjoy.
One finds solace where he can. I found some here, seeing that I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t figure how to download a simple client app for their products ! It’s “funny” the first few minutes, and gets old quite fast.
Thank you so much for your help. Now you’ll get me hooked to your blog 🙂
–Jeff
Happy to have helped. 🙂
Thank you very much !!!!
what a bunch of flankers… to make it so hard to download their stupid software… only need it for a course… would never us it my work environment if this is how they run their business. Make me waste half my day just to get a trial of it… no thanks.. but thanks to Joseph 🙂
Had to use google to find their free client installer. LOL thank you kindly 🙂
Thanks for this Jospeh, as a heavy user of vCenter i still like vsphere as a backup incase vCenter has issues….. Agree that i’m not sure why VMware make it so hard to find the client!
And frankly, there are quite a few things that the web client can’t even come close to matching on the thick client. I hope it doesn’t go away too soon!
Thanks for the download links. Also as an FYI, I have the IBM 5.5u1 customized version of ESXi. Even after updating with Update Manager to 5.5u2, they still report as IBM 5.5u1 customized and the link to download Vsphere still points to the 5.5u1 version of Vsphere.
This is such a service … I spent too much time looking for the download link for the client, not to be found…why doesn’t VMware do the same thing ??
trying to save time getting sw prior to building the box…almost gave up, figuring I would get the client by logging into the host, but now you have saved time, and I will have everything I need for a (hopefully) successful build (with a 60 day life, I understand)….
I know there is an internal push at VMware to get this more accessible, but who knows. Until then, I’ll keep doing what I’m doing to make this accessible. Glad to have helped you in your day!
Words cannot express everything, a sincere thank you for the links @Joseph.
Thanks so much. I’ve searched VMWare site for other things in the past, so I know what kind of time you just saved me. Much appreciated.
Add me to the growing ranks of people saying THANK YOU for the link!!!
Thanks a lot for the links. I always stumble around looking for it the once-in-a-blue-moon that I need it.
Has anyone considered the fact that VMware revenue from services is climbing and revenue from product sales is falling? At least as a percentage of total revenue. Google for the quarterly VMware reports to see the trend.
I wonder if the services side of VMware is becoming the focus of the company. They seem to be handing Microsoft the hypervisor market on a platter. I’ve not seen the likes of it before. When Hyper-V was first released I tried it, rolled my eyes in disbelief it was so bad, and moved on quite content with VMware. Seems that’s changed.
Thoughts?
Mark,
I definitely see that not only VMvware, but almost all companies are focusing on services and recurring revenue. I believe that this trend as well as the trend toward cloud computing will eventually hit a shift similar to those described in Clayton Christensen’s book, The Innovator’s Solution: Creating and Sustaining Successful Growth. In the book, he highlights the recurring shifts from centralization to decentralization and back again. At some point, these companies will realize that their products need work, and customers will once again want to bring things in house for performance and cost saving reasons. VMware probably believes that they are so far ahead of the curve that they can sacrifice some of that lead to grab services revenues for the short to mid term. It’s certainly an interesting game and I’m interested to see how it plays out.
I’m really cozying up to the free Windows Server Core Hyper-V – as hard as it is to admit it. At least for Windows VMs it’s easier to manage. And there’s NO difficulty getting the management client!
*laugh* Absolutely! I’ve tried warming up to Hyper-V and I do use it from time to time, but the challenges of AD integrated authentication make it unpleasant when managing multiple environments. Another iteration or two and I hope it’s what we all want it to be.
But for single hosts or non-AD environments (yes, I said non-AD) that just need to run a few Windows VMs – particularly on older hardware … you get the idea.
Yea, good point!
Thanks a lot!
Thanks!! Saved me from going merry go rounds at the vmware website. One would think that their insistence on registering for the free downloads would make things easier….but no.
Thanks a ton! You saved me, I was going crazy on Vmware site.
Thanks for the links, VMWare makes it impossible to find in their lists. As i need it to connect to the cloud from someone else i was only needing the client but VMWare still wanted me to sign in and on and agree to lots of stuff only to find or better yet, not to find the client needed. Please keep up your site, your’re doing a good job here!
Thanks guys! I couldn’t agree with you more. Glad to have been at service.
Thanks for the links. No more using the web interface. Yipee!
Unfortunately from what I’ve heard, the web interface is here to stay and the Windows client is not. Kind of a shame from a performance standpoint since that web interface just isn’t nearly as responsive.
Thank you, even with an account, vmware’s website is a damn chaos..
Thanks for the link. It’s still difficult to find this client on the VMWare site.
Agreed. They’ve made it a touch easier in the past few months, but still WAY too complicated. Hard to see it getting any better as they grow.
Thanks for this, it is very helpful
Regards
You can always find link to latest client for your esxi server with entering URL in browser http://your-server.
Thanks a lot! It is really very helpful
What is so difficult about downloading the client. When you install vsphere it is hosted on the http site of the vsphere server. Easy Peazy.
If you have an ESX Server in a local network handy, you can just do the following:
httpt://
and you get an option to download the correct version of the vSphere client.
I think the site’s gobbling up links, so here’s the address again:
https
and then download it from the link provided there. Super fast as well as the correct version matching that of the ESX Server/vCenter.
Thank Man for your help!
This is a dream!! Thank you so much. You don’t know how long …. well I guess you do know 🙂 I couldn’t find it. This is a life saver to say the least. Thank you Joseph.
Thanks for making this available. Saved me a lot of time going through the vmware links.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Happy to help guys!
Thanks you very much for this Joseph. Wish I found this page sooner and hadn’t wasted so much time registering on the vmware site to still not be able to download this.
Thanks ! you just saved me a ton of time lurking through VMWARE download web
Thanks a lot for the download links.
Kevin, you are most welcome.
Thanks!
Happy to help Dominik!
Hi Joseph,
Thanks a million for share the link, by any chance do you have the ESXi 5.5 software?
I can include a link, but it requires you to be logged into the myvmware.com site (free registration I believe). The direct download link includes a hash that I believe is specific to my account. In any case, the direct ESXi 5.5 download link is
Is this client backward compatible with ESXi 4, if not I will just use the client that came with the platform.
It is backward compatible in a way. If you install this one and try to manage an older version, it will download and install the compatibility portions to allow you to manage any of them. That’s what I do.
Thanks a lot for the link 😀
I think the HP and VMWare sites must come from the same source: Hell.
Thank you so much for the links!
Thank you so much man. Really helpful.
Thanks for the link. Very helpful.
Here a link to VMWare Site with the “official” download-Links for Client 😉
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2089791
Thanks for posting the links.
hi jo,
thanks for the link. made life simple and easy.
kindly advise on following:
i am planning to deploy windows 2012, and use esxi (free version) as the hypervisor.
i cant make up my mind whether i should go for esxi 5.5 or 6.0.
also, is vsphere client 5.5 compatible with esxi 6.0?
I would go ahead and use ESXi 6 personally. I just upgraded my environment to ESXi 6 yesterday. Once you use the 5.5 client with a 6.0 environment, it will upgrade the client for you so you should be good to go. Enjoy!
thanks for the sharing your thoughts.
You, sir, are a freaking stud. I was dreading trying to find this download after I installed 5.5 today because I know how they work and know how hard it was going to be to find. Man, back in the day they were pretty cool with their vmware products but now…. holy monkey they’ve gone all crazy and..shhhtuff. Thanks for the links, I’ll remember you. 😉 and in a good way too!
Glad to hear it Ned! Put it to good use.
HI mate,
DO you have Vmware vcenter for window/Linux since my connection are getting broken through VMware sites.
Thanks
Kumar
Thanks for the links! I was also frustrated by VMWare’s site.
Unbelivable! second time this week, fourth time this year. they must be have a dozen guys there trying to look this blog like a saviour from heaven. you are the man!
Here is a link from VmWare with all needed download links!
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2089791
Nice that page seems to reference everything, the latest VMware-viclient-all-6.0.0-2502222.exe is out!
man tanks for your multiple links
Thanks for the links!
Just wanted to say thank you – i continually get lost in the Stupid VMWare site, even though we are entitled to download the software. VERY ANNOYING. Thanks again for making my life easier!
Thanks guys! Glad to have been of service.
Thank you Joseph For the link. Just want to add is there any way I can use vsphere client on ubuntu.
Thanks Again!!!
You’re quite welcome! Without emulating, I don’t believe there is a way to use that C client on Ubuntu. I think that’s why they went to a web based vCenter server.
Awesome! Thank you Joseph!
*laugh* Nice Chuck! I told you this post was popular. 😉
Thanks for the links; saved me considerable time.
Thank you for the links! Saved lots of round trips through vmware’s website to look for vsphere’s download link.
On the other hand I have to say I am happy that I am not the only one having trouble finding the download link! At some point I started to think that I cannot browse a web page as other people do! 🙂
Cheers!
Thanks very much Joseph. Trying to find this on the vmware website is next to impossible!!
Mr Turley:
Thanks for contributing these links and for facilitating the absence of access to this free software. Much appreciated.
Hi, thank you very much 🙂
Thank you so much. A really useful resource!
Thanks!
You’re my VMWare hero!!
Thanks a lot! Really useful.
Thanks for links….it definitely is incredibly difficult to download the vsphere client directly from vmware’s websites.
Thanks for providing the links.
Joseph, you are once again THE MAN! VMware makes is really difficult to find the free client versions and now even ESXi is elusive. I have struggled with this forever and didn’t even get help from my VMware rep!
Thanks for the links, this saved me a lot of time.
Saved my bacon this morning with this (not to mention a 1/2 day drive to the client on a Sunday). Thanks!
I feel like you. Thanks for the Link.
Thanks a lot!!! I agree. VMWare is making our job harder. This is not something you can get easily.
Thank you for the Vsphere Client links!!!!
I could NOT find them on VMWare’s site.
thanks a lot!
Thanks Joseph, you’re right in that VMware make things more difficult than they need be, and why they do this is beyond me.
What an absolutely pathetic way to handle a website. Thank you so much for posting these. Every time I clicked a download link and even tried to download their stupid download client it would spit me back in the main menu again.
Then I tried to leave website feedback, but whenever you click website feedback in the dropdown the page just refreshes and spits you back where you were. Same issue in multiple browsers.
Thanks Joseph, links were really helpful,
thanks brother , its works on xp
Thank you so much for sharing these. I don’t know what kind of wizardry you worked to get these, but your powers are better than mine. I have been beating my head against a wall with VMWare trying to get this for an hour. I put in a support ticket and was told an engineer would call me back in 8 hours. Absolutely ridiculous service. You rock!!
Thanks so much for posting these links, the automatic downloader was 404ing, and I spent 30+ minutes trying to download the client from VMware’s site.
THANKS!!!
You bet. Happy to have been of service.
Thanks a lot, Joseph!
I love your shortcut to download VMware-viclient-all-5.5.0-3024345.exe and I could not understand why VMware so called a smart software compnay makes a so lousy and difficult way for just downloading VMware-viclient-all-5.5.0-3024345.exe.
Hello Joseph Turley
Thank you so much for your pages. it’s really help me to learn for vmware
Thank you, Joseph.
I had the same Problem to find the right Client Version.
Thanks a lot , I am happy that I am not the only one suffering to download vsphere client , I spend about an hour trying to download the vsphere client and vmware is directing to software manager where i could not find what i need , thanks a lot really
Happy to have helped. 🙂
I had about a fifteen minute window to shut down our two vm servers, and no vm client installed on my new workstation. Wasn’t able to locate it on VMWare’s web site either, wish I would’ve came here first. I ended up doing a hard shut down. Both servers started back up with no problems, but would have preferred using the client to shut them down properly.
Thank you very much for this!!
You bet! Happy to help.
Awesome job. Thank you
Thanks, I just bookmarked your sites!
I was looking on Vmware’s website than google gave me your site. You saved me a lot of wasted time, so thanks.
thank you !!
THANK YOU!
Thanks, you saved me a lot of time!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Happy to help you guys out. 🙂
Thank you for posting this!
Do they have a version for MACs?
Unfortunately I don’t believe they do. Best thing you can do if you have vCenter is use Chrome on the Mac and access the web version. It’s pretty darn good when you get used to it.
3 years later and this posts popularity continues to rise – Thank you, Good Sir.
It does indeed! Glad to help the Jackson community.
Thanks a lot…. too useful your post!!!
Totally agree
A million thank you, just on time before they drove me crazy, damned VMware…
thanks a lot man!!! I was really pissed off, and then i got this 🙂
I thought it was me! I have emailed them about this issue 10 times and no answer. When different sales people try too hit me up, I lay it on them also and they immediately stop communicating.
So anyone have a clue as the their issue these days?
NO clue! Let’s just say that further down the line in the comments a VMware employee himself came here looking for this. 🙂
This post in invaluable! Thank you sir!
like the thousand people here, Thanks! Why they make life hard..
Thanks .. really helpful
Thanks a lot! I used to be able to download it by pointing my browser at the esxi host but no now it’s nearly impossible to find.
Thank you I just spent 30min trying to figure out which item to download from their page and couldn’t figure out which one for this company I just moved to. Then I ran across this article and the issue was solved in seconds.
Keep up the website! I’m an IT expert for YEARS and I couldn’t download the vSphere client from the official website. Why did they have to complicate it so much?
Thanks so much!
Aha just what i was aimlessly looking for! Thank you Mr. Joseph.
This is exactly why I HATE licensed software. Not that I have to pay for it. My customers do. But because of willful obfuscation, hard to find downloads, being pushed to newer versions, disappearing of older versions, documentation suddenly disappearing.
As for VMWare, recently I downloaded 5.5 to run in a test environment. Two weeks later the same version was impossible to find. I was pushed to version 6 all the time. And when entering the 5.5 download areas my download was “illegal”. Now I inherited a number of 5.5 systems, so I had to test on 5.5. Not 6.
Thanks to another person like you who posted deep links to 5.5 downloads, I was able to download. And save a copy for Gawd’s sake.
jlinkels
Thank you for this! Yes, they absolutely make it too hard for people to figure out which is the correct client. And then trying to download it is also impossible.
Thanks a Lot for your contribution
Thanks much! These links are a huge help to IT folks! I hope someday VMWare stops taking the Apple point of view and realizes that giving users more options is a GOOD thing.
2018 And we’re still downloading …… Thanks for the link.. I spent a few tries hitting lots of walls.. It does make sense to get Vcenter essentials but still.. Proof of concept sometimesisn’t 60 days…
Hi Joseph ! Excellent. Thanks a bunch ! 🙂
Thanks a bunch for the links, especially taking the time as new releases came out to keep this updated. Like you, I often found myself connecting to an ESI host just to find the darn thing, but now that the program has been discontinued with vSphere 6.5, I find it even more difficult to find these installers. I’ll be saving a link to this page in Evernote!
Sure, VMWare may surely be hard to go around, but that’s not the only spamming stupidity around here : anyone who sets there internet-browsing futuristicly-soled foot on VMWare’s property and attempts to download something there is forced to create an account by answering, at the minimum, a bundle of personal informations, even if they have absolutely no need and no business with that! And speaking of business, tell me, exatly where in the VMWare homepage or rules does it say that you have to own a company to rightfully download something?! Suddenly, as you click “create an account”, you have to input tons of company information… which is impossible scince I don’t own a company! VMWare, I know you think that every single adult in the planet has a company up his sleeves- even the individuals’ employees are in charge of some other company- no need to say the site is for professionals… but no, this is not the case. It’s like asking a user for their sister’s name : for one thing you wouldn’t need to ask that unless you were attempting to sell the info to a 3rd party or wanted to spam the person; for another it’s none of your business; and finally it’s something that not everyone has! You’re intelligent enough to make excellent software, you know what company info can consist of, I admit that’s above me, but you can’t even judge correctly what are the sole informations that EVERYONE possesses??! I would be forced to lie or loophole the form’s limitations to be most truthful to create that darn account!
Just to say thanks, this has saved me a lot of time through many re-installs 🙂
I agree your opinion
it’s hard to find the client download
thank a lot
Muchas gracias, me ha servido de mucho poder descargarlo.
Un saludo desde Spain.
Leo.
De nada Leo!
Have bookmarked this page – after spending ten minutes going in circles – in frustration I searched why is it so difficult to download the VSPhere client – which led me here.
Many Thanks
Thank you for being an absolute legend!
Any idea why the links stopped working?
